What we check
- Building sum insuredShould match the cost to rebuild today, not what you paid or the municipal value.
- Contents valueWalk through your home room by room. Most people underestimate by a wide margin.
- Under-insurance (average) clauseIf you're under-insured, every claim, even a small one, is paid out proportionally.
- Geyser and water damageCheck what's covered for the geyser itself and the damage it causes.
- Maintenance exclusionsGradual damage, damp and wear and tear are usually excluded.
- Security warrantiesAlarm, burglar bars or armed response may be a condition of theft cover.
Common mistakes
- Insuring the house for its market valueLand doesn't burn down. You need rebuilding cost, which may be higher or lower.
- Never updating after renovationsA new kitchen or extra room raises the rebuild cost.
- Assuming the landlord covers rentersTheir policy covers their building, not your belongings.
- Not keeping proof of ownershipSlips, photos and serial numbers make theft claims much smoother.
Is your current policy still right for you? Policies that were right a few years ago often aren't today. A review costs nothing.

Usually, but gradual water damage and poor maintenance aren't. Check the wording for your area.
