Life and risk cover

The definitions that decide your payout.

Two disability policies with the same cover amount can pay out very differently. The wording is what matters.

What we check

  • Own occupation vs. any occupationOwn occupation pays if you can't do your job. Any occupation only pays if you can't do any job.
  • Lump sum or monthlyLump sum cover pays once. Income cover pays monthly.
  • Partial disabilitySome policies pay a portion for partial disability, others pay nothing until it's total.
  • Cover amountEnough to adapt your home, clear debt and replace lost earning power.
  • Expiry ageDisability cover usually ends at a set age.
  • ExclusionsPre-existing conditions and specific activities may be excluded.

Common mistakes

  • Only looking at the cover amountThe definition decides whether you're paid at all.
  • Matching life cover by defaultDisability needs are often higher than death needs, because you're still alive with expenses.
  • Not updating your occupationA job change can change how you're assessed.
Is your current policy still right for you? Policies that were right a few years ago often aren't today. A review costs nothing.

Common questions

Which is better, own or any occupation?

Own occupation is broader and usually costs more. The right choice depends on your job and budget.

Do I need both disability and income protection?

Many people benefit from both: a lump sum for once-off costs and monthly income to live on.
