Short-term insurance

Know what your car insurance actually covers before you need it to.

Most people only read their car policy after an accident. By then the excess, the sum insured and the small print have already decided what you'll get paid.

What we check

  • Sum insured vs. market valueIf your car is insured for more than it's worth you overpay. If it's less, you carry the difference.
  • Your excess structureBasic, voluntary and additional excesses for young or new drivers can stack up on one claim.
  • Credit shortfall coverIf a financed car is written off, the payout may not settle what you still owe the bank.
  • Car hireWithout it, you're without transport for the full repair period.
  • Tracking and security requirementsTheft and hijack claims can be rejected if the required tracker isn't fitted and active.
  • Who drives the carThe regular driver must be correctly listed, or a claim can be reduced or declined.

Common mistakes

  • Never updating the sum insuredSet at purchase price and never changed as the car aged or the loan balance moved.
  • Choosing the lowest premium on the highest excessCheap every month, painful on the one day you need it.
  • Personal items left in the carLaptops and bags usually need separate portable possessions cover.
  • Wear and tear claimsTyres, brakes and mechanical failure from age aren't insured events.
Is your current policy still right for you? Policies that were right a few years ago often aren't today. A review costs nothing.

Common questions

What moves my premium the most?

Where you park overnight, your claims history, the car's make and model, the driver's age and experience, and the excess you choose.

Is third-party-only cover enough?

It covers damage you cause to other people's property, not your own car. It can make sense for an older, paid-off car if you could afford to replace it yourself.

What is the 'average' or under-insurance clause?

If your car is insured for less than its value, the insurer can reduce your payout in proportion.
